If you are in a survival situation, what would you rather have with you: a utility knife or an automatic knife? When you first think about it, it may be easy to decide that automatic knives aren’t going to be that useful in these situations, not when there are knives out there that come with compasses, cork screws, tweezers and various other options. However, if you really think about it, these extra little add-ons may not be exactly what you want. When we think of knives that could be used in a survival situation we normally think of those folding knives that are stuffed full of varying-sized blades, nail files, scissors, and even the occasional spoon. We may even conjure up images of action movie stars crawling through a jungle with nothing more than their wits and the special little components they can fit in the handle of a surprisingly large knife. Sure, at first glance we thing we could survive anything with a knife like that, but the truth is that what we really need might be a little simpler than those knives. Automatic knives have some great advantages in situations like this. For one thing, they are small and portable. Whether you are carrying them in a pocket or clipped to a belt, you probably won’t even notice that they are there. Those larger knives may seem like a good idea for all their extra features, but what do you really need from a knife? You need a reliable tool that can cut a variety of materials. You can probably do without the tweezers (unless you consider a splinter a survival situation). Products like the Pro-tech automatic knives or the Microtech OTF knives have developed a reputation for being strong and reliable. The blades deploy and lock into place so you can count on the ability to safely use them on a variety of jobs. So when you’re in a difficult situation, you just need to ask yourself whether you are looking for convenience and usability or, well, a spoon.
