Seem like Allegiant Air is doing quite well of late.  There was a new report on the internet that they just purchased 13 more McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jets from Scandinavian Airlines.  So as of November 2011, Allegiant Air has a fleet of 74 aircraft of the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 family.  In addition to being the only U.S. carrier operating four MD-80 models (the MD-82, MD-83, MD-87 and MD-88), Allegiant Air has also purchased six Boeing 757-200s, with which it plans to provide Hawaii air service from the U.S. mainland

Deliveries of the new aircraft to Allegiant are about to start and the order should be completed by early 2013. Allegiant apparently is making it a business practice to purchased used and older version of the Boeing 717 as the workhorse of its fleet.  Allegiant Air previously purchased 32 MD-80s from Scandinavian Airlines.  Allegiant Air is the only US airline to operate four models of the MD-80 family. The Las Vegas carrier operates 22 MD-82s, 35 MD-83s, eight MD-87s (a shorter MD-80 version which Allegiant Air uses for charters) and nine MD-88s.  After Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas, the MD-80s were renamed Boeing 717s. 

Allegiant Air relies mostly on the MD-80 air frame, but the carrier bought six Boeing 757-200s to initiate airfare to Hawaii sometime in 2012 and 2013.  Allegiant Air will begin offering Hawaii airfare with its Boeing 757s once it has obtained enough operational experience for the FAA to certify the airline for ETOPS (extended-range twin-engine operations) service, an operational qualification necessary to fly twin-engine aircraft on flights to Hawaii.  The Las Vegas carrier plans to operate its 757s in a single-class 217-seat configuration.
